Yes, you sometimes have to shop around to find a mechanic you're happy with. There are a couple of local motorcycle shops here (one a Honda/Suzuki dealership, the other independent) that do very good work. There is another shop locally that I have heard some horror stories about, and that I would not want to go to for service.
